2026
Cornillo Nuovo, Rieti, Italy
Team competition for Terremosse - SESAM x Amatrice 2026

The competition focuses on Amatrice, a mountainous municipality in the heart of the Apennines profoundly marked by the 2016 Central Italy Earthquake. Beyond physical destruction, the territory reflects broader conditions affecting Italy’s Inner Areas, including depopulation, isolation, and recurring yet superficial media attention. The initiative seeks to cultivate attentive forms of observation and care, encouraging participants to engage with Amatrice through sustained, sensitive, and context-driven action.
Within this framework, the workshop in Cornillo Nuovo responds to a landscape defined by demolition, reconstruction, and the persistent presence of construction sites. This unstable condition is understood as an opportunity for experimentation. The proposal consists of a mobile wooden structure designed to operate between representation and everyday use. Formally conceived as an accordion-like system, it supports reconfigurable panels or textile canvases that invite collective appropriation. When folded, these elements become tables for work and gathering, reinforcing the duality between symbolic gesture and practical function.
The choice of wood counters the traumatic symbolism of metal scaffolding, drawing instead from children’s spontaneous wooden constructions observed on site. Resting on wheels and never anchored to the ground, the structure remains adaptable, affirming architecture as an active gesture of care, participation, and collective reactivation.
